Yoga and Meditation Retreat

A safari in Tanzania is a magical experience. From days spent in the open savannah surrounded by thousands of migrating wildebeest and zebras to nights spent watching breathtaking sunsets from the comfort of your tented lodge. It is an opportunity for adventure, relaxation, and reflection – an incredible natural environment for yoga and meditation.

For thirteen days you will have the opportunity to improve your yoga and meditation practice while joining a group of people ready to embrace all that Tanzania has to offer. Beginning with daily practice, you’ll take part in a 7-day safari and cultural experience through Tanzania’s famous northern circuit of National Parks. Afterwards, you’ll spend 5 days on the beach in Zanzibar, the most beautiful island off Tanzania’s coast.

The Retreat runs from March 18, 2018 – March 30, 2018.

Day 1
Arrival

On Sunday, March 18th, 2018 you will arrive at Kilimanjaro (JRO) Airport near Arusha, Tanzania. After passing through immigration and picking up your bags our Above Safaris staff will meet you and escort you to your hotel in Arusha. You are free to relax at the hotel before dinner, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the rest of the group, your private yoga instructor, Briana Aguilar-Austin, and some of the Guides for your trip, who will join you to explain the details of your safari.

Day 2
Maasai Boma

In the morning after breakfast, your Guides will pick you up at the hotel and you will travel to a rural Maasai village about two hours away from Arusha. The Maasai are the oldest and largest tribe in Tanzania and will provide an introduction to the cultures of Tanzania. During your experience with the Maasai you will learn about their lives and dynamic relationship with the land and wildlife. After an afternoon yoga and meditation session in the village, you will travel to Maramboi Tented Camp where you will have dinner and prepare for day one of your safari.

Day 3
Tarangire National Park

After breakfast you will travel to one of Tanzania’s most spectacular parks, Tarangire. Often compared to Serengeti, Tarangire is known for its wide open savannas which are a sanctuary for wildlife – most notably its herds of elephants. It is guaranteed to be a highlight of your adventure. After lunch in the park and some more time exploring, you will head back to Maramboi Tented Camp where you’ll be able to join an afternoon yoga session, go for a swim, and have dinner. 

Day 4
Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast you will head to Lake Manyara National Park,  at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. Known for its diverse ecosystems, Lake Manyara is home to dense jungles, grassy plains, and acacia woodlands, each of which has distinctive wildlife. The great soda lake which Lake Manyara National Park is named for is flocked to by wildlife especially during dry seasons. Today, you’ll have the option of spending half of the day either joining a walking safari or a biking safari around Manyara and a town close by.  In the afternoon you will start your journey to Serengeti, stopping to overnight at Kitela Lodge on your way. 

Day 5
Travel to Serengeti National Park

In the morning you’ll have the option of joining an early morning yoga session before breakfast. Then, you will continue your journey to Serengeti, passing through Ngorongoro conservation area on the way. You will arrive in the early afternoon and will get an introduction to the park through a half day game drive on the way to your overnight location. Hailed as the premier safari destination and home to the annual migration of over a million wildebeest, Serengeti offers sights of unimaginable beauty. At Camp you will have the opportunity to join a sunset yoga and meditation session before dinner. You will overnight at Kubu Kubu Tented Camp, a tented lodge overlooking the plains of Serengeti.  

Day 6
Serengeti National Park

In the morning you’ll have the option of joining an early morning yoga session before breakfast. Then, you will head back out on a full day game drive with lunch in the park. Today, there will be the option to head back to camp early to spend time relaxing by to the pool or joining a special afternoon yoga and meditation session overlooking the Serengeti plains. If you choose to continue on your game drive you’ll return to Kubu Kubu Tented Camp in time for dinner and a relaxing evening with the rest of the group. 

Day 7
Travel to Ngorongoro

In the morning you’ll have the option of joining an early morning yoga session before breakfast. After breakfast, you will head back out to do your final game drive in Serengeti. Around lunch you will make your way out of Serengeti heading towards Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you will overnight at Lake Masek Tented Camp before entering the famed Ngorongoro Crater the next day. At Camp you will have the opportunity to join a sunset yoga and meditation session before dinner. 

Day 8
Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Early in the morning you’ll have the option of joining a sunrise yoga session. After an early breakfast you will depart on your final day of the safari taking you to Ngorongoro crater, a collapsed volcano that has remained unchanged for millions of years. Inside is a microcosm of Tanzania, home to most of the animal species found throughout the country. With the crater walls serving as a natural enclosure for the area’s animals, you have the chance to spot all your favorites. After leaving the crater in the afternoon, you will travel back to Arusha where you will be able to join an evening yoga session before dinner and overnight at your Arusha hotel.

Day 9
Travel to Zanzibar

Today marks the beginning of the second leg of your adventure in Tanzania: five days in paradise. After breakfast and an optional yoga session, you will travel to JRO airport where you’ll catch a quick flight (~1 hour) to the Tanzania’s most famous island. Zanzibar is known for it’s idyllic white sand beaches, fresh catch sea food, spectacular reefs for diving, and fascinating culture and history.  When you land in Zanzibar, you’ll be heading right to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island in a village called Nungwi where you will stay at The Zanzibari. At the beach you will have the opportunity to take part in daily yoga and meditation. You will also have the option of purchasing additional activities and services at The Zanzibari including snorkeling and diving, a boat cruise, and a variety of spa treatments… it’s completely up to you!

*Optional Add-on: Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Dolphin Excursion, Sunset Cruise, Spice Tour, Spa Treatments, etc. Add-on’s can be arranged directly with your hotel but if you have specific activities in mind, we’re happy to arrange.

Day 10
Zanzibar

In the morning you have the option of joining a yoga and meditation session on the beach before breakfast. Then, spend the day relaxing at the beach, exploring the local village, or taking part in one of the many activities offered. At The Zanzibari, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. However, if you decide to eat outside the lodge you will be responsible for any costs incurred. Before dinner you have the option of joining a yoga and meditation session.

Day 11
Zanzibar

Before breakfast join a yoga and meditation session by the beach. Afterwards, enjoy another amazing day in paradise! Evening yoga and meditation will be offered before dinner. Overnight at The Zanzibari.

Day 12
Zanzibar

Before breakfast join a yoga and meditation session by the beach. Afterwards, enjoy another amazing day in paradise! Evening yoga and meditation will be offered before dinner. Overnight at The Zanzibari.

For those interested in seeing Zanzibar’s rich history and culture, there is the option of traveling to Stone Town on Day 13. In Stone Town you will get the opportunity to explore the town, check out the famed fresh-catch night market in Forodhani Square, and even experience some of Zanzibar’s night life. You will overnight at Swahili House, however, no yoga and meditation will be offered. 

Day 13
Depart Zanzibar

In the morning, at the beach you’ll enjoy your final yoga and meditation session by the beach. Take a last dip in the blue green waters and soak up the sun one final time before you head to the airport to return to the real world! In the afternoon, you will be transported to the airport where, unfortunately, you’ll be headed home.

For those in Stone Town, you’ll have breakfast at the hotel and then can explore town a bit more before being transported to the airport in the afternoon.

Trip FAQs

 

What kind of yoga and meditation will be offered on the retreat?

 

  • Daily yoga sessions, 1-2x per day, taught by Briana Aguilar-Austin, a 200 hr-RYT certified vinyasa yoga instructor, with advanced certifications in meditation, pranayama, anatomy and Reiki.
  • YOGA FOR ALL LEVELS: from beginner to advanced. Briana will teach sequences which challenge the body, in order to build strength, and safely gain flexibility and mobility. Each session will be different, depending on our daily schedule, how people’s bodies are feeling and the time of day. The mornings may be a more invigorating practice while the sun rises over our safari bungalows, while the afternoon practice may be more restorative and healing poses, which allow our bodies to relax after a long day of watching wildebeest migrate and elephants play. No yoga experience is necessary. Briana will tailor the yoga sessions so that each person can feel challenged, motivated and rejuvenated.
  • MEDITATION FOR ALL LEVELS: Never tried mediation? That’s ok! Guided meditation directs our thoughts on a subject, in order to let go of nagging, every day distractions (like to-do lists!). This will be the perfect way to start a beautiful day in Tanzania. Meditation sessions will honor the incredible beauty of the landscape around us, putting us in the perfect mindset to relax and enjoy the day’s schedule of visiting a Maasai Boma, watching lions lounge in the sun or dipping our toes in the pristine water of the Indian Ocean in Zanzibar.

How do I secure my spot on the trip?

 

  • A deposit of 25% ($1,050 USD) must be submitted to secure your spot on the trip by December 31st, 2017. Click on the Book Now button above to begin the process or contact us with any questions using the Ask a Question button above or by emailing us at info@AboveSafaris.com.
  • The trip maximum is 30 people. Securing your spot on the trip is on a first come first served basis so it is important to get your deposit submitted early to not risk having the trip fill up.
  • Payments can be made by bank transfer (must include any transfer fees added by your bank) or by secure credit/debit payment (a 2.9% fee applies to credit or debit payments). During the booking process we will provide instructions for wire transfers and credit/debit payments.
  • Our standard terms and conditions apply.

 

When are the remaining trip fees due?

 

  • The remaining 75%  ($3,150 USD) is due on February 1st, 2017, 45 days before the trip departs.
  • You are free to submit the balance of the trip anytime up to the due date.

 

What does the price of the trip include?

 

  • EXPERIENCE: Seven day luxury safari that includes visits to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Also includes a day trip cultural experience with the Maasai tribe. Five day luxury retreat on the beach in Zanzibar.
  • DAILY YOGA AND MEDITATION: 1-2x per day provided by private instructor.
  • ALL ACCOMMODATIONS: on safari, luxury tent accommodations – shared, double occupancy; in Zanzibar, luxury bungalow accommodations – shared, double occupancy. (If choosing to spend one night in Stone Town, trip will include three nights luxury bungalow accommodations and one night lodge accommodation in Stone Town.)
  • DOMESTIC FLIGHTS: round trip flights from JRO Airport near Arusha to ZNZ Airport in Zanzibar.
  • GUIDE: a skilled, professional english-speaking safari Guide.
  • MEALS: three meals per day, non-alcoholic beverages, and water during days on safari.
  • TRANSPORTATION: all group airport transfers and group transfer to Stone Town in Zanzibar, if needed.

 

What is not included in the price of the trip?

 

  • International flights to and from JRO airport in Arusha, Tanzania.
  • Tipping for yoga instructor, safari guides and staff at accommodations. Since there will be one guide per 6-7 people, we suggest tips at a rate of $5 per person per day ($35 per day for 6-7 people) for safari guide. Tipping for your private yoga instructor and for staff at accommodations is also encouraged.
  • Any add-on activities (ie. spa treatments, snorkeling, boat tour, etc.) in Zanzibar.
  • Alcoholic beverages where not provided free of charge.
