Maasai Boma Visit

duration: ranges from 1/2 Day to full day with camping overnight

Close enough to Arusha to plan into an extra day in town or to plan along your safari route, on this excursion you will spend the day in a rural Maasai village. The Maasai are one of the most significant tribes in Tanzania known for their rich culture and traditional ways of life that they still continue to this day. You will learn about their lives, cultural practices, celebrations, and dynamic relationship with the land and wildlife.

Pro Tip: Many companies bring their clients to Maasai Bomas along the safari route. While a convenient and quick stop, they do not provide an authentic experience. At Above Safaris, we have partnerships with some Maasai families who invite our clients to come and experience real life in the village.

Bike Tour to Lake Manyara

Duration: 1/2 day

You will experience Lake Manyara and the surrounding area in a way which is rarely seen by tourists - by bicycle. Optimal for active travelers but mostly flat, this 2 - 3 hour ride will take you along the base of the Rift Valley Wall into the village of Mtu Wa Mbu, through the forest to the shore of the great soda lake, where you'll have a chance to get up close to the park's wildlife along the way. After the bike tour you'll head back to the village where you'll have a Swahili food feast prepared by a local chef.

Materuni Waterfall Hike and Coffee Tour

Duration: Full day

This hike is about 2.5 hrs from Arusha in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro outside of Moshi. The hike itself is pretty easy (about 1-1.5 hours) but is a great opportunity to see the villages at the base of the mountain, great views of Kilimanjaro, and an amazing waterfall as the climax. After the hike you'll have a delicious homemade local lunch and will do a tour of a small coffee farm where you'll learn about coffee growing and production, and will even get a chance to process your own coffee and taste the fruits of your labor.

Arusha Waterfall Hike

duration: 3.5hrs, 5hrs, or 8hrs depending on the starting point

This hike is right in Arusha in the foothills of Mt. Meru.  It's a more challenging hike than the Materuni Waterfall Hike and gives you fantastic views of all of Arusha and the mountain, plus you get to see what local life is like up in the foothills as you walk through local villages and farms. You’ll be rewarded with a refreshing swim once you reach the waterfall.

Pro Tip: Perfect activity for getting through the jet lag at the beginning of your trip!
